The hunt begins with "Prey," a new prequel to the popular '80s action flick "Predator." The Hulu original movie is the seventh entry in the franchise, and it starts streaming on August 5.
After pitting the deadly alien Predator against the likes of Arnold Schwarzenegger, Danny Glover, Adrien Brody, and a colony of Xenomorphs in previous entries, "Prey" focuses on an earlier encounter set in the 1700s. This time, the green-blooded intergalactic trophy hunter sets its sights on defeating a young Comanche warrior.
The film isn't quite an origin story, but is instead a separate side adventure that aims to fill in some gaps in the franchise timeline. The movie stars Amber Midthunder and is directed by Dan Trachtenberg ("10 Cloverfield Lane").

"Prey" marks the first time a Predator movie will premiere on a streaming service instead of in theaters. It's also one of the first major franchise films to debut exclusively on Hulu.
The original "Predator" is considered an '80s sci-fi classic, but later titles in the franchise have struggled to connect with audiences and critics. Early reviews for "Prey" have been very postive, however, and the film has a "92% Certified Fresh" score on Rotten Tomatoes as of August 4.

Is 'Prey' a Predator movie?
Yes, "Prey" is part of the Predator franchise of sci-fi action movies. The Predator series has gone through a lot over the last 35 years and the story canon has become increasingly convoluted. "Prey" will work as a sort of prequel that takes place before other entries without tying directly into any of the previous movies.
Generally speaking, "Predator" (1987), "Predator 2" (1990), and "The Predator" (2018) form a pseudo-trilogy with references to each other and some recurring characters. 2010's "Predators" was more or less a soft reboot. It doesn't take place on Earth, doesn't have anything to do with previous films, and even introduces a sub-species of alien hunters that are different from anything else we've seen.
Then there are the "Alien vs. Predator'' films — for better or worse. This spinoff series pits predators against the Xenomorphs from the Alien franchise. The first film, directed by Paul W.S. Anderson, didn't win over critics but it did decent box office and was generally well received by fans. The sequel "AVP: Requiem" was less successful.
Where can I watch the other Predator movies?
You don't have to catch up on other Predator movies to enjoy "Prey," but if you want to, Hulu makes it easy. Virtually all of the films are currently available on the service.
Here's a full rundown of all the Predator films on Hulu right now:
- "Predator" (1987)
